Veterans Aid & Attendance program

What is Aid & Attendance?
Aid and Attendance is a VA financial pension assistance program for those veterans and surviving spouses who are eligible and require the aid and attendance of another person or who are housebound. The Department of Veterans Affairs designed this pension to provide care for Veterans and/or surviving spouses who require the regular attendance of another person to assist with eating, bathing, dressing, undressing, medication dosing, or other activities of daily living.

This is a “Pension Benefit” and IS NOT dependent upon service-related injuries for compensation. Aid and Attendance can help pay for care in the home.

Who is eligible?
Any veteran who has served 90 days or more in active military service (reserves are not eligible), with at least one day during a wartime period (World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam), and who was honorably discharged. A surviving un-remarried spouse (widow or widower) of the veteran is also eligible.

How do you qualify?
Out-of-pocket medical expenses – including medications, insurance premiums, and paid private duty care – are deducted from monthly income when determining eligibility. If the expenses exceed the income, the veteran is eligible. A doctor also must certify that the applicant’s health requires him or her to receive care from others.

What about net worth?
Net worth is the sum of a claimant or beneficiary’s assets and annual income. You should report all of your net worth. For purposes of Aid and Attendance, the net worth limit effective December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023, the net worth limit to be eligible for the Aid & Attendance benefit is $150,538 (this amount can change annually).
